Window tinting refers to any manner of window treatment, which alters the color of an object, typically for the purpose of making it more resistant to ultraviolet radiation (UV). Window tinting is used on glass windows and on some partially transparent, but opaque, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films on doors and windows of boats. It is often applied to improve the energy efficiency of a product by reducing thermal loss. The term refers to both the process and the product. In the context of products, it refers to any material which has a layer of substance that prevents heat transfer from passing through it; the transparency, or tinting, changes the physical characteristics of this layer, so that the product is better able to trap UV rays and minimize their transfer to surrounding objects.

There are several options for window tinting. The first is to apply a film to your windshield, so as to reduce the amount of glare that it receives from the sun. Though originally designed to diminish the glaring effects of the sun on the driver's eyes, these tints are now also used to prevent the sun from harming the sensitive skin under your watch. Both options reduce the amount of glare that is transmitted through the windshield and into the driver's eyes. To an observer viewing a vehicle through the driver's eye, both options appear to have the same amount of glare and imperfection. By subtracting the amount of light that is transmitted through the window tinting, the driver is assured of improved visibility and less risk of being hit by a car or other vehicle. The added protection comes with a price, however.

While the primary function of the film is to decrease glare, some argue that its primary function is to increase the lifetime of a vehicle. With its clear surface, it allows for more thorough cleanings between service visits. It also makes it easier to see when adjusting the seats or turning the radio dial. Many people who live in areas where there is frequent dust or sunlight have reported that their original clear window tinting film has been repeatedly cleaned and replaced because of the ease with which it can become stained or faded. This constant replacement serves no purpose other than to make the owner's life more difficult! Some insurance companies will cover the cost of installing a window tinting or light transmission of less than luminous reflectance film if the owner also includes a sunscreening device. A sunscreening device will be necessary in areas that are prone to ultraviolet light exposure, especially the windows in a vehicle. The UV rays that penetrate through glass can quickly cause damage to a car's interior while also making it much more difficult to see. Installing a sunscreening device that fits inside the window helps to block out these harmful UV rays and allows a driver to see clearly.

If the manufacturer does not provide a back glass darkening material for window tinting, drivers should purchase a product that will enhance the brightness of their visibility and cut down on the amount of time it takes to darken the glass. Visibility tint comes in a variety of different colors and patterns that will help drivers see even with a thick, dark frame behind them. There are also products available that will increase the amount of visible light transmission to an additional 10% without making the inside of the car or truck too dark. While the amount of visibility tint on the front of a vehicle may be less than the back windows, increasing the amount of light transmission from the back windows may give a driver greater visibility and save them time on the road.
